Vista Clad

VISTA CLAD is our brand name for Enamelled Tempered Spandrel glass.

Acrylic ceramic enamel is fired onto the surface of glass to provide a high opacity finish with a bold colour finish. Carey Glass International have many years experience of manufacturing Vista Clad which is available in single glass or more usually in insulating units or within laminate glass.

Vista Clad spandrel glass is typically specified for buildings non-vision areas to mask construction elements such as steelwork or concrete slab flooring. With the clever use of Vista Clad a refurbished building can use a combination of vision and spandrel glass to provide the appearance of an entire glass construction.

Detailed Description

Visual Characteristics

Greater contrast between vision and spandrel areas occurs when using tinted (uncoated) glass or High Performance ‘Solar Neutral’ coatings on clear substrates. Under these conditions, insulating glass spandrel units can provide the illusion of depth and approximate the look of the vision glass more closely. Keeping both the vision and the spandrel glass construction similar (the same exterior glass, colour, coating, etc) can minimize the contrast under various lighting conditions. We suggest specifying a neutral opaque Vista Clad on surface 2 of an IG unit for this application.

Vista Clad is usually within an IG unit. High performance glass units incorporating Vista Clad are widely used when a uniform all glass look is desired for the building exterior. Typical applications include commercial fixed windows, curtain walls, shop fronts and wall cladding. Glazing conditions, such as in transoms and partitions, where the glass can be viewed in transmission should be avoided and is not recommended by us as highlighted earlier.

Variable sky conditions may influence the percentage of glass colour and appearance. When viewing glass from the outside, the dominant visual characteristic is the visible light reflectance. Viewing conditions may result in a greater visual disparity between vision and spandrel areas. This is due to the relative transparency of the vision glass, resulting in the perception of depth in the vision areas, in these conditions it maybe that the opaque spandrel glass tends to look two-dimensional.

Curtain Walls

Curtain wall construction typically includes both vision glazing and Vista Clad in non vision areas. The Vista Clad area can often compliment the vision area in terms of exterior appearance as this is relatively easy to achieve when low light transmitting (or highly reflective) glass types are used. These glass types provide the least contrast between vision and spandrel areas under a variety of lighting conditions. Glass with a high light transmission / low reflectance typically provides greater contrast between vision and spandrel areas.

Insulation on Vista Clad

A variety of materials can be applied to the inner surface of Vista Clad to provide a level of heat insulation (or acoustic) to the desired criteria. Either directly applied or encased in metal (Aluminium or steel alloy trays) which are affixed in using various bonding methods. Care has to be taken at this stage as to what is feasible and realistic due to the selectivity of the vision glass being used in the project. Samples of insulated panels are shown in the attached file to support the variety of styles and specifications we can provide.

Primary Uses

Vista Clad applications range from functional to decorative as follows:

  • Masking structural components whilst maintaining a consistent glass look
  • Custom Colour Applications
  • Non Vision Areas
  • Partitions
  • Curtain Walls
  • Shopfronts

Available in a variety of colours to harmonise or contrast with a vision area, the ceramic frit is applied to surface 2 of the glass using our horizontal roller-coating process, the maximum width is 2400mm and dependent on the glass thickness we offer a variety of sizes: 6mm substrate is 3600mm: 8mm & 10mm is 4200:12mm up to 5500. Specialized acrylic based paints containing finely ground glass mixed with inorganic pigment produce the desired colour. Vista Clad is then heated to around 700 degrees fusing the frit to the glass surface, which produces a ceramic coating almost as hard and tough as the glass surface itself. We do not recommend Vista Clad is used in vision areas as in areas without a dark background; scattered pinholes and some non uniformity in the ceramic frit thickness or coverage may be evident. As spandrel glass should not be used in transoms, partitions or other areas where it can be viewed due to light transmission, if it is likely to be used where light may be seen through the glass, please discuss with us, we will find a solution; it’s what we specialize in at Carey Glass.

It is accepted as common working practice and backed up by the Glass & Glazing Federation that pinholes, screen marks and opaque particles are permissible in ceramic enamel spandrel glass due to the nature of processes used and its intended application.

There are 11 standard colours stocked by Carey Glass.
