The Apple Market
Location: Waterford, Ireland
Architect: DHB Architects
Summary
“The Apple Market is a real gem in Waterford but had become cluttered and fallen behind some of the rest of the city centre. This project has given it a huge boost and the work done here is of an exceptional quality that stands comparison with any urban area, not only in Ireland but more widely in Europe. This is another big step towards Waterford realising its full potential and a statement of confidence about our future" City & County Mayor Pat Nugent.

It follows a multi-million euro investment that has seen the trading area transformed to a contemporary urban quarter. A €1.2m steel and glass canopy now covers the one-time market and opens the area which has a high concentration of bars, restaurants and nightlife for multiple uses such as concerts, festivals, street theatre, markets and outdoor screenings. Located in one of the oldest areas of Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford’s Apple Market is situated between the city’s Viking and Norman walls.
