The Petchey Accademy

Summary

A 1200-pupil academy designed around themes of transparency and sustainability.

“The 14th May saw the official opening of the incredible new Petchey Academy on Shacklewell Lane. Huge glass walls cover the exterior of the building, reflecting light and creating a striking image. The building is a stylish addition to Shacklewell Lane. It certainly catches my eye.” Hackney Gazette

Glass

Fully-glazed curtain walling in blue reflects the colour of the academy’s emblem and defines the school’s local identity and street frontage. The specification of this material also conveys a sense of transparency and openness. Light filters through the atria, glazed screens in classrooms and the solar-controlled glazing. Solar shading is provided by external louvres and glazing.

Details

The strategic arrangement and orientation of spaces and material selection ensures daylight is captured throughout the building. The University Gateway infill will be clad in a continuation of the existing façade, which is an aluminium curtain walling system. The dark grey framing elements will continue and frame double glazed units of the same specification as that adjacent. There will be a mix of blue shades incorporated into the glazing in the same manner as the existing to give a seamless appearance as any other of the academy curtain walling facades. The Dry Play extension will be a simple enclosure with predominantly glazed facades. This will be in curtain walling to match the terrace façade of the existing dining/ atrium space. Doors will be integrated into the curtain wall and ironmongery coordinated.
